Women’s Groups Welcome SC Bail to Soni Sori

Women Against Sexual Violence and State Repression (WSS) welcomes the Supreme Court order of 12th November, granting interim bail to Soni Sori and Lingaram Kodopi of Dantewada, who were arrested in October 2011 and have been incarcerated since then in Chhattisgarh on fabricated charges. Although a temporary reprieve, we hope that this interim bail will be converted into a regular bail in the next Supreme Court hearing on the matter on 3rd December.

Soni Sori Released!

Soni Sori urges activists and groups to continue their fight for justice for people like her, who continue to languish in jails.

On Nov 14, 2013, Soni Sori and Lingaram Kodopi were released from the Jagdalpur jail on interim bail granted by Supreme Court.  After their release, they went to the Ma Danteshwari Temple and then onto their villages Palnar and Sameli respectively. Soni was greeted by her three children, her father and the rest of her family. Soon the entire village came by to see her.

Itishree Pradhan

Women Against Sexual Violence and State Repression (WSS) deeply mourns the tragic death of Itishree Pradhan, aged 27, who was a Sikhya Sahayak at Tikiri Upper Primary School of Kashipur Block in Raygada district of Odisha. Her succumbing to 90% burn injuries and ultimate death is a direct outcome of her taking up the offence of sexual harassment at the hands of Netrananda Dandasena, the School Sub-Inspector (SI). WSS salutes Itishree Pradhan for her courage and persistence to bring to book the sexual harassment of the SI. Her courage is most inspiring even as she lost her life fighting against this grave injustice of sexual harassment at the workplace that women from all walks of life have to struggle against in this patriarchal society.
