WSS Condemns Attack on Dalit Woman Auto Driver

Women against Sexual Violence and State Repression (WSS) condemns the attacks upon chithralekha, a dalit woman auto driver from Payannu, Kerala. WSS urges the local administration, in particular the collector, to take immediate action for justice for chithralekha. Chithralekha has been repeatedly attacked by CITU/DYFI autodrivers since 2005. This group of Savarna and obc men have tried to run her over with an auto in 2005 and burnt her auto later in the year; attacked her husband with a knife in 2006; and beaten her as well as her husband, daughter and brother-in-law in three separate attacks in 2010. In 2013 her husband was almost run over by a bus; later in the year a group of 30 men attacked her and her family at home; and in another attack in 2013 her husband was beaten and implicated in a legal case.

Gang Rape of a Dalit Girl by the Dominant Caste Youth in Dabra Village, Hisar District, Haryana

That the Hindus most often succeed in pulling down Untouchables is largely due to many causes. The Hindu has the Police and the Magistracy on his side. In a quarrel between the Untouchables and the Hindus the Untouchables will never get protection from the Police or justice from the Magistrate. The Police and the Magistracy are Hindus, and they love their class more than their duty. But the chief weapon in the armoury of the Hindus is economic power they possess over the poor Untouchables living in the village. —Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

On 1st October 2012, National Campaign on Dalit Human Rights (NCDHR) facilitated a fact-finding visit to Dabra Village of Hisar District in Haryana where a Dalit man committed suicide after his minor girl was gang raped by the dominant caste youths. WSS condemns caste oppression of Dalit employees at CSI Hospital, Kancheepuram

Women against Sexual Violence and State Repression (WSS) is deeply anguished to learn that Jacqueline, a dalit nurse at CSI Hospital in  Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu was subject to such abuse by the hospital’s director that led Jacqueline to attempt to commit suicide. Both Jacqueline and her husband Solomon (who is also a staff at the hospital) were badly abused before the whole hospital using caste derogatory language by the Director who also threatened to fire them from their jobs. The suicide note written by Jacqueline clearly identifies Dr. Brinda Nirmal, Director of CSI Hospital, as the person responsible for provoking her to take this extreme step. Continue reading
