Continue reading

WSS Statement Against the rapes and murders in Hyderabad and Unnao
On December 6, 2019 four unarmed men – lorry workers aged between 20 and 24 – were killed by the Telangana police at the spot where they were suspected to have gang-raped and killed a 26-year old woman just over a week ago. That same afternoon, a 23-year old woman from Unnao who spoke out against being gang-raped in December last year, was on her way to the Raebareli court to testify against her rapists. One of the men she had accused of raping her had been arrested but was let out on bail just a week before her most recent court hearing. She never made it to court that day, because she was set ablaze by five men en route. Two of these five men were her accused rapists. One of them was the same person who had been let out on bail just days before. After walking a kilometre, still aflame, she was taken to hospital, her body battling 90% burn injuries. In less than two days she succumbed to her injuries. Just before she died, people in Hyderabad were celebrating the killing of the four men who had allegedly raped the young veterinarian doctor, by the police while they were in custody, crying out that “justice” had been served. WSS Statement Condemning Barbaric Sexual Assault and Murder of Dalit and Adivasi Minor Girls In Tamil Nadu
15th November 2018
WSS strongly condemns the barbaric assault and murder of a minor dalit girl in the outskirts of Salem district in Tamil Nadu on October 22nd 2018 by her upper caste neighbor and the brutal murder of an adivasi girl in Dharmapuri on November 10th 2018.
In Salem, a man from the dominant Mudaliar caste had made sexual advances towards the victim, Rajalakshmi, which she had refused, and later reported to her mother. A student of class 8, Rajalakshmi was the daughter of a graveyard worker, native of village Thalavaipatti Theruku Kaadu near Attur, Salem district. Since she was 9 years old, she had been facing sexual harassment, unwanted sexual advances and abuse at the hands of her upper caste Mudaliar neighbor who is now 26. Everyone in the village was aware of the sexual abuse she had been facing, yet no one dared to confront the perpetrator. Continue reading
This document is the outcome of a series of discussions within WSS in Delhi that began in late 2016 and picked up pace early in 2017. The purpose of this process was:
A. To share experiences of and develop a perspective on sexual harassment, sexual
violence and a range of other ways in which women are undermined (which we
have grouped under the term ‘gender discrimination’) in different kinds of
institutions, including spaces of progressive political interaction.
B. To outline our political perspective on how these questions may be approached
and dealt with, including but not limited to redressal mechanisms.
C. To propose a redressal mechanism for WSS.
